Guy Fawkes is my hero. No really, he is. I wish we celebrated Guy Fawkes Day here in the United States. But I guess it would seem irrelevant to 95% of the population.

Uselessness, did you happen to see that movie with Hugo Weaving in it...? What's-it-called, "V for Vendetta"? Not my choice of movie, but intriguing use of the holiday and story behind it. I like that it made the holiday better known in the United States--if only slightly.

Sure did, actually that's where I discovered the Gunpowder Plot in the first place (though the real story is more interesting than they made it in the movie). V for Vendetta is one of my all-time favorite films; I quoted a nice line from it about words, on my profile.
It's funny, here in America we celebrate Independence Day, a holiday established in honor of overthrowing a government. Yet the day has evolved into a celebration of how great our government is. Conversely, Guy Fawkes Day memorializes the successful execution of a traitor against the government, and yet he has become a sort of hero to the Brits, instead of the villain he once was. That's what I call irony.

Really? That's how you first heard of it? Interesting. There was a discussion in my house the other day about just that issue--did the movie introduce a whole lot of people to the history, or was it a sort of blow-by with no real effect? Thanks for the insight.
Yes, the real story was far more interesting. Actually the real story behind/origins of many holidays is far more interesting--takes only a scratch of the surface to find out most of our assumptions have gradually been turned upside-down from the original ideas...
